stg, being an enjoyer of jane twdg is like being forced into an expert-level course on the way misogyny manifests in video game spaces.
god forbid a woman be complex or difficult or provably mischaracterized (see tags) at the end of her arc to service the culmination of a man’s storyline.
#“kenny was harrowed by loss in his family” so was jane. that is part of them literally being foils.#“kenny teaches clem more!” literally untrue a lot of clem’s combat style is rooted in what jane taught her (targeting the knees & basically#everything clem knows about knife combat- jane is also mirrored with lee in this sense as like was previously stated knife combat later goe#on to become a major element of how clem fights only outweighed by her use of firearms)#she teaches clem the gut trick & we see the innovative thinking that comes with being more independent & proactive influence the way clem#handles sticky situations & deals with feeling disempowered. like this is going to sound odd but the fact that her behaviour mirrors jane#at her best (even though her relationship with aj is more maternal the way she approaches him much more as an equal & capable of holding#agency over his own life is much more reminiscent of the way she was treated by jane & luke positively + the rest of the adults negatively#than how kenny or even lee treated clem [though lee did start to view her this way after the train] + her people reading skill.) & at her#worst (isolating herself + becoming cold + the fact she is [based on player choice] willing to leave aj behind for both their survival +#struggling with her need for community vs her sense of distrust in their lasting stability + her tendency to be unfeelingly pragmatic to a#fault except when it comes to aj + the fact that clem- at her worst is self-serving & somewhat uncaring in comparison to kenny’s possessive#hot-headedness etc) indicates that on some level- regardless of a player’s second season ending- clem considered jane to be a better#behavioural role model- this isn’t to say kenny was unimpactful but rather that his impact was different- where behaviourally we see elemen#of lee luke jane & even carver in clem’s later behaviour kenny’s impact is more so that of a cautionary tale- somebody clem cared for who#she witnessed lose himself entirely to his worst character flaws due to an inability to cope with the world she now lives in- something he#even admits to her in multiple endings iirc. kenny becomes the fate clem must strive against at all costs.#similar can be said of the ending where you go with jane regarding how it analogies clem’s fears & low self worth as a result of being#unable to maintain what she had with aj (in a manner that mirrors jane’s story in that she’s choosing to leave behind a living relative due#to no longer being able to be what they need- again depending on player choice*)#*my exact memory of the third season is hazier tbh. iirc it is dependent on player choice whether she is complacent with the decision to#make her leave the new frontier.#like the way the ending was handled was sloppy & jane was mischaracterized as a result of being shoved into a conflict that we know for#certain was not intended to go to her. calm down & just enjoy your man without being weird & misogynistic dear god.)#(also if you like clem & jane you will like holly robinson & selina kyle dc)#twdg jane#jane twdg#twdg

QI YAN’S MAN VS SELF HAS UTTERLY CONSUMED ME God idk if I’ll even be able to properly articulate allllll the thoughts I have. But like GODDD!!
Ok so like, Qi Yan’s story is defined by their man vs self conflict from the very fucking beginning right? Their identity of being from the Jing vs the Wei, being a man vs a woman, etc etc. but juuuust as they bring their revenge quest they tell Ding You [paraphrasing here] “Qiyan Agula is dead. Call me Qi Yan”. AND THAT ENDS UP RINGING TRUE IN SO MANY WAYS!!! Like at the beginning it means that Qi Yan sees themself as someone that is already dead, and Qi Yan is a vehicle for them to undergo their revenge plot. But then they’re realize they want to live!!! And they fall in love and can envision some sort of future for themself! But that future is again trapped between the identities of Qiyan Agula and Qi Yan.
And then when they break up with Bayin and Bayin tells them that if he ever sees them again he will kill them, and Qi Yan willingly gives up their ability to ever return to their homeland. And then Qiyan Agula really is dead!!!! There is no turning back for this person, they can only be Qi Yan. And THEN just as they had comes to term with THAT they find the book of the Northern History of Jing and discover that they cannot live as Qi Yan either!! By being a knowing participant in the country that genocided your own, esp being the wife of the fucking emperor!
But when Qi Yan accepted that they were alive, part of that was to give up their revenge. Or at least part of it? There was no way to reconcile being dead (taking revenge) and being alive (having a future with this person that makes you happy). And Qi Yan makes a choice, when they go back to the capitol after the divorce, that they are alive. But that means giving up their revenge, and in doing so, they are forced to give up their revenge against the people that desecrated the bodies of their fucking parents, Ding and Lu. And though Jingnu got revenge for them it was while balancing the interests for her own kingdom (a good thing, to be clear) and at her own speed. And thus Qi Yan, at the is dead (completed their revenge) but also alive (future with Jingnu). They are a villain who is punished and a hero who is rewarded. Qi Yan is a study in conflicting idea existing in the same body, and I LOVE THEMMMMMM

I started writing this in the replies of a different post but quickly reached the word limit so I'm putting it here instead. These are my thoughts on across the spiderverse and they contain heavy spoilers. Please only read if you have seen the movie because it's the kind of movie that gets absolutely ruined by being spoiled.

So the antagonists in both ITSV and ATSV have a lot in common.
Miguel and kingpin have the same motivation in each of their respective films. They both wanted to live a life that didn't fuck them over and they crossed through dimensions to try and make it happen.
They both fail to achieve their goal: kingpin's attempts to bring his family back are thwarted by the spiders, and the world Miguel enters literally falls apart around him.
Their actions have ramifications that further the conflict of the series. By creating his collider, kingpin gave the spot his powers, allowing the spot to wreck havoc through dimensions. Miguel's new dimension unraveling led him to believe in specific canon events that must happen to every spider person, and that any anomalies to his formula would cause the multiverse to unravel.
There's a pattern to be seen here, and while the next movie is likely going to focus somewhat on the conflict against the spider society, I think it would be cool if the conflict between miles 1610 and miles 42 followed a similar pattern.
Miles 42 lost his father, and 1610 showing up has proven to him there are other dimensions out there, including one where his dad is still alive, which would provide a motivation in line with the previous ones. Miles 42 is framed pretty clearly as an antagonist, meaning Miles 1610 as the protagonist will likely find a way to stop 42 somehow, meaning all that's left to see is the ramifications. I honestly don't know how it all will play out. Beyond the spiderverse could take this story in so many different directions and most of them would be satisfying enough for me.
The ultimate coolest move in my book would be to create a meta narrative of sorts where each movie has the same key elements that make up the story, but handle the conflict in three different ways; what if each spiderverse movie was an alternate version of the same movie? ITSV would be a man vs man conflict (kingpin pulled the spiders out of their own universes and miles has to defeat him to repair the damage done). ATSV would be a man vs society conflict, as miles is up against a society of other spider people who believe he's an anomaly who needs to be contained, destroyed, or forced into conforming to the spiderman formula. I predict that BTSV (at least miles' main arc) will be a man vs self conflict, showing miles a version of himself who behaves the same way as the villains he's faced so far, and having him reconcile with that.
The villains this series has given us have all been victims of circumstance, people who are trying to do what they can to get themselves out of a difficult or painful situation. What makes them villains is the choices they make in trying to get out. Kingpin, Miguel, and the Spot (and presumably Miles 42 but it's a bit too early to say) will stop at nothing to get what they want, and they don't care about the people they hurt along the way.
Destiny and canon want to put Miles through the ringer like every other spiderman, but Miles rejects these very concepts in the climax of ATSV. Miles chooses to reject these ideas, trying to find an alternate path much like the antagonists. But Miles has a different motivation: in addition to making a better world for himself, he's fighting to make a better multiverse for all of the spider people.
I'm not a super active writer, but a writing adage I've picked up over the years is that protagonists ask questions and antagonists give answers to those questions. Its up to the protagonist whether to believe if those answers are true. In BTSV Miles' question would be "Am I a villain too?" Miles 42 answers yes by showing our Miles that at the very least, he is capable of becoming a villain. If Miles rejects that answer, he will no doubt do so by remembering that unlike the villains he's faced, he's fighting for something greater than himself.

biggest gripe is when they don’t include kuukou’s kindness in writing even tho it’s as integral to his character as his brattiness
#vee queued to fill the void#i’m not going to beef with the stage play again nobody wants to see that lol#like when you make kuukou’s attitude the main focus of conflict i get it genuinely!!!! it is an ongoing source of conflict for him#and the easiest route to write down if you don’t want to challenge kuukou who is incredibly self actualised#kuukou will be his own hype man acting like he’s the hottest shit lmao but he knows and readily admits he’s still weak and has growing to do#that mindset isn’t the easiest to challenge (esp in bat vs mtr play where the story rightfully had other things to focus on)#so rolling back his development unfortunately makes sense lol#but removing kuukou’s kindness makes no sense to me actually lol esp since it undermines all the work he’s put into his religion#i’ve said it once i’ll say it again: you don’t get as far as kuukou has in his ascetic training without understanding the core values lol!!!#wisdom and compassion!!!!! wisdom and compassion!!!!!!#the unami chapter puts him in a tough spot because even tho he’s in the right it wasn’t necessarily the correct answer to the problem#and he had to grapple with ichiro’s hands being tied due to the bigger picture and trying to help unami blindly without the whole story#which is exactly how you need to challenge him lol his principles are right but life isn’t fcking easy lol!!!!#the brain’s about to start vomiting about kuukou’s life cycles and that needs to be a whole other post so lemme not lol#but kuukou’s adventures start because he sees a boy in trouble and wants to help#and kuukou wants to be able to look at his life when it ends and say he did good he lived it to its fullest and he wasn’t ashamed of it#and some of that impact gets taken away when you remove his kindness 😤#c: kuukou👑

I just realized I haven't read a single romance novel this year that didn't have a third act breakup
I am begging for different stakes please

I'm struggling against myself lately because I've got the Shiny New Object thing happening where I just found Adventure Game Studio and I've also just agreed to help someone script their visual novel and I'm just. I need to not overstretch myself. But at the same time all of these things are so intriguing and fun for me so I want to work on them. But also I have other things I want to complete. So I shall keep struggling against them. :)
